Introduction to Sahyadri Farms
In a country, where smallholders farmers often struggle with unpredictable markets, middlemen exploitation and low incomes, Sahyadri Farms, a startup led by Dr. Vilas Shinde, took the initiative to work together with these small farmers and bring a change into their lives. It is not just a startup but a movement that empowered thousands of farmers to take charge of their own destinies.
The story started in 2010 in the Nasik district of Maharashtra, which is one of the leading grape producing regions in India. Mr. Vilas Shinde, a farmer himself and a son of a farmer, observed the daily struggles of his peers like post harvest losses, volatile prices and lack of access to market. He decided to bring the change and he did so by establishing Sahyadri Farms, a farmer producer company which is owned and operated by the farmers it serves.

Startup Model
Sahyadri Farms was founded with a vision to create a sustainable and scalable model for farmer prosperity. What makes it unique is its ownership structure. Unlike traditional startups which are backed by venture capitalists or angel investors, Sahyadri is a collective effort of more than 18,000 farmers who are also the stakeholders in the business.
These farmers pooled their resources and invested in a world class, end to end agri supply chain which includes all activities from sorting, grading, packaging, cold storage to export infrastructure. This helped eliminate middlemen, ensure better prices, reduce wastage and boost export quality.
Statistics that stand out
Sahyadri Farms has more than18,000 registered farmers and working over 30,000 acres of land. It works in almost 252 villages. It has collaborations in 42 countries and earned an annual revenue of Rs. 1400 crores in FY23.
Building an Agri Tech Powerhouse
Sahyadri farms has become one of India's largest integrated agri platforms. Today it exports premium produce like grapes, pomegranate, tomatoes, etc. to over 40 countries. It has its own retail brand Sahyadri Farms Fresh and operates a state of the art processing facility for pulps juices and ready to cook products. Now, the farmers earn up to 30% more than before and have consistent income and market access.
Impact That Goes Beyond Business
Sahyadri Farms isn’t just about profits; it’s about purpose. Their impact includes empowering smallholder farmers with training, tools and transparency, creating rural jobs through processing and logistics units, promoting sustainable practices with drip irrigation, reduced chemical use and soil health initiatives and supporting women entrepreneurs through self help groups and employment in post harvest units.
Conclusion
In an era, where startups often conjures images of tech giants and unicorns, Sahyadri Farms reminds us that real impact can also sprout from soil and sweat. It’s a startup in every sense, bold, innovative, and transformative, but its true value lies in how it brings dignity, power, and prosperity back to the hands that feed the nation.
