In a world grappling with climate change, unpredictable weather, and environmental degradation, one Indian space startup is rising — quite literally — to give Earth a closer, clearer look.
Meet Pixxel. Born in Bengaluru in 2019, founded by two visionary students — Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal — Pixxel isn’t just aiming for the stars. It’s building a constellation of satellites to scan our planet in ways never done before.
Seeing What Others Can’t: Hyperspectral Imaging
Pixxel’s unique strength lies in hyperspectral imaging — a powerful technology that captures data across hundreds of spectral bands, far beyond the visible light our eyes can see.

What does that mean?
From detecting gas leaks and crop diseases to tracking mining impacts and climate shifts, Pixxel’s satellites act as Earth’s MRI machine. They turn raw space data into actionable insights for industries like agriculture, energy, climate science, and defense.
MegaPixxel: India’s First Private Satellite Factory
In January 2024, Pixxel unveiled “MegaPixxel” — a 30,000 sq. ft spacecraft manufacturing facility in Bengaluru.
With advanced cleanrooms, integrated assembly labs, and eco-friendly systems, this facility can build up to 40 large satellites every year — placing India on the map as a global space manufacturing hub.
From Demo Missions to NASA Deals
Pixxel has already launched 3 demo satellites — Shakuntala, Anand, and D2 — in partnership with ISRO and SpaceX. And in January 2025, they took it up a notch: launching 3 out of 6 planned operational satellites aboard a SpaceX rocket from California. These satellites are now sending detailed data from space, helping track everything from water stress to deforestation.
Up next? Pixxel will launch the remaining 3 satellites in Q2 2025 — and then expand to a 24-satellite constellation by 2026, unlocking daily global coverage of Earth like never before.
NASA, Google, BP: Big Players are Watching
Pixxel isn’t just another startup anymore — it’s India’s first space startup to sign a contract with NASA under the $476 million Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition Program.
And that’s not all.Backed by Google, Lightspeed, Radical Ventures, and Accenture, Pixxel has raised over $95 million in funding. They’re also partnering with global heavyweights like British Petroleum, Rio Tinto, and even the Indian Ministry of Agriculture.
Earth’s Watchdog, From India
With a 140-member team working across Bengaluru and Los Angeles, Pixxel is proving that innovation knows no borders. They’re not just building satellites — they’re building solutions to help humanity understand and heal the planet.
