The Challenges of Eruvaka

In India, aquaculture — fish and shrimp cultivation — is a billion-dollar industry, employing millions of rural livelihoods. Yet for decades, farmers had to paddle against an unseen foe: unpredictable water conditions in the ponds. Overfeeding, oxygen crashes, and unexplained drops in water quality nearly killed off crops overnight.

In 2012, a young entrepreneur Sreerama Prakhya realized this needed to change. Merging his engineering education with profound empathy for rural farmers, he started Eruvaka Technologies with one goal in mind: introduce IoT and real-time data to India's ponds, enabling farmers to raise healthier fish, lower feed expenses, and increase profitability.

What They Do and Why It Matters

Eruvaka’s solar-powered smart buoys monitor critical pond parameters — dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH — 24/7. Farmers get instant updates and alerts on their phones, helping them adjust feeding or aeration before a crisis strikes. What used to be guesswork became precision aquaculture.

The effect has been enormous. Farmers have seen as much as 30% savings in feed — feed being the greatest sole expense in shrimp farming — and much improved survival, translating into larger, more reliable harvests.

Eruvaka's easy-to-use tools brought high-tech aquaculture within the reach of small farmers without any technical expertise. News spread from Andhra Pradesh coastlines to shrimp centers in Southeast Asia. Now, Eruvaka's intelligent pond technology empowers thousands of farms in several nations.

Financial Performance

In FY23, Eruvaka achieved ₹24.48 crore in revenue, along with collaborations with international aquaculture majors such as Nutreco, now holding a majority stake. This collaboration drives R&D for future-generation tools: AI-based feeding systems, predictive disease management, and climate-resilient farming solutions.
